Special Delivery

Local retailers are expanding their services to include same-day delivery on everything from essentials to electronics…

Today, anything seems possible—even getting your groceries, a brand-new TV or a hot dinner from your favorite local restaurant delivered right to your doorstep. In fact, retail behemoths like Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Macy’s and Publix are doing just that thanks to new delivery services now underway in the Orlando area.

Amazon may have spearheaded this trend with their popular delivery service, Prime Now, which gives customers in more than 30 cities across the United States the option of one-hour delivery—for a small fee—and free two-hour delivery on countless items ranging from necessities including milk, eggs and paper towels to toys and everyday items. “Customers love the convenience of superfast [one-hour delivery] and free two-hour delivery on tens of thousands of items delivered right to their doorstep,” explains Amazon spokesperson Ana Rigby. “Some of the most popular items ordered through the service in the area include bottled water and bananas.”

What’s more, the internet-based retailer has grown their delivery options to include Amazon Restaurants, which—in partnership with a variety of popular restaurants in over 20 cities including Orlando—gives customers the ability of having hot food delivered to their home in one hour or less. And just like that, other retailers have also joined the delivery wave, including Walmart, which partnered with Uber to ensure same-day grocery delivery service. “We began making grocery deliveries with Uber in June of 2016,” explains Walmart spokesperson Molly Blakeman. “Uber provides a valuable service to our customers and we’re very pleased with the work we’ve done together.”

After testing grocery delivery through crowdsourced services, the company expanded their pilot to include the Orlando area, after positive customer feedback. “We’re pleased with what we’ve seen thus far,” says Blakeman.

As for Uber, the location-based taxi service, the feeling is mutual. “We’re continuing to build technology that helps power delivery logistics for businesses to offer more convenience for their customers—delivering what they need, when they need it,” says Javi Correoso, the public affairs manager for Uber in Florida.

The simplicity of the program allows customers to fill up their online shopping basket, select a convenient time for delivery—they must be present for the order to be delivered—or even place an order up to six days in advance. Based on the selected delivery time, personal shoppers will pick and scan items to ensure accuracy.

“Then, our team will request an Uber Delivery Partner using the UberRUSH technology platform to come to the store, pick up the customer’s order and take it directly to the customer’s location,” explains Blakeman. “When customers order before 1 p.m., they can have their order delivered to their door in as little as four hours.”

To add to the now growing options of grocery delivery service, Publix has also started programs to enhance their customer experience with time-saving options. Since July 2016, Publix has offered delivery via Instacart and it is now available in select areas, with same-day delivery, in as little as an hour. “We are very optimistic about this service and the customer response has been favorable so far,” says Dwaine Stevens, a media and community relations manager with Publix.

In the electronics realm, Best Buy has also joined the ranks of same-day delivery service in the Orlando area. “We first began a same-day delivery test with Deliv in the Bay Area in the fall of 2015 and by the spring of 2016, we were in 13 markets across the country,” says Best Buy spokesperson Danielle Schumann.

“We desire to be there for our customers no matter how they like to shop, so our same-day delivery service was intended to give them more options for getting the tech they want, when and how they want it,” adds Schumann. Those products eligible for same-day delivery include most Best Buy products in stock at the store—with the exception of some items that come with dimension and weight restrictions.

With so many services available, it all comes down to what’s easier for the custumer, as these brands are making strides to allowing users to capitalize on their time. “We know our customers are busy [and] time is a new form of currency to them,” points out Blakeman. “Our mission goes beyond saving them money. We’re saving them time and money. Creating solutions that do that is what we focus on day in, day out. It’s fun … and it lets our customers have more fun.”
