Old Fashioned Taffy Pull

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 tablespoons corn starch
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 2 teaspoons glycerin (optional)
  • ¾ cup water
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ to 1 teaspoon flavoring (vanilla, lemon, banana, coconut)
  • 3 drops food coloring (optional)

  • Mix together first 7 ingredients in a 3-4 Qt. sauce pan. Place sauce pan over medium heat and stir with a bamboo spoon until sugar dissolves.
  • Continue to stir until mixture begins to boil, then let cook undisturbed until it reaches 260° on a candy thermometer.
  • Remove from heat and add flavoring and food coloring. Stir gently and pour into a shallow, greased cookie sheet or silicone mat to cool.
  • When the taffy is cool enough to handle, grease your hands with butter and pull the taffy until it’s light in color and has a satiny gloss.
  • Pull the taffy into a long rope and cut with greased scissors into 1 inch pieces. Dust the pieces with powdered sugar, then wrap in waxed paper and twist the ends of the wrapper.

CAUTION
When making candy, the syrup gets very hot. Kids, don’t try this without the help of an adult!
