Best of the Best 2023

Do you have those people in your life who are constantly telling you that you need to try this or try that? The opportunity to be those people is one of the reasons we love it when our Best of the Best issue rolls around, since it’s our opportunity to celebrate all the new and longtime favorites we’ve returned to again and again. In the following list, we’ve highlighted the things we love about the best local dining spots, places to shop, health and wellness go-tos, and everyday essentials—and we’ve included our readers’ favorites, too.

Sourdough Bread House
While we love the plain sourdough bread here, the tomato, olive and garlic, the hearty rye or the standout cinnamon raisin offerings are can’t-miss. But plan ahead if you want to grab one of the specialty loaves, as they require three days advance notice.

Tori Tori – Best of Small Plates

Tori Tori
Whether it’s the grilled yakitori skewers full of chicken thighs and spicy yuzu pepper shrimp or addictive dishes like the Japanese fried chicken and the blue crab and corn croquettes, the small plates at Tori Tori are big on flavor.

John & John’s
The pies here are done in the classic New York style and feature any number of toppings, but there’s something quintessential about a solid cheese slice, and John and John’s does not disappoint. We’d also humbly suggest a slice of the vodka pie with fresh mozzarella, chopped garlic, basil and pecorino.

Abracadabra Ice Cream Factory
You’ll scream for ice cream at this shop where your sweet treat is flash frozen with liquid nitrogen right before your eyes. Choose from a dizzying array of add-ins—fruits, nuts, cakes, candy and more. If the possibilities seem a bit overwhelming, opt for one of their suggested concoctions that are sure to satisfy.

Kelly’s Ice Cream Company
With multiple locations throughout the area, you’re never too far away from grabbing a perfectly thick milkshake made with Kelly’s rich, sweet and creamy homemade ice cream. Of course, no matter what flavor you choose, it’ll arrive covered in whipped cream with a cherry on top.

The Glass Knife
With a menu this enticing, you’re going to want to make repeat visits so you can sink your teeth into showstoppers like the croissant smeared with homemade pimento cheese, bacon jam, avocado, arugula and tomatoes or the comforting biscuits and sausage gravy.

Phat Ash Bakery
This Mills 50 “speakeasy” bakery is where those who know flock to for exotic, oversized, made-to-order cookies baked by a native New Jersey couple whose creations are as creative as they are crave-worthy. And since the menu changes frequently, you never know what will come out of the oven next.

Sister Honey’s in Orlando
Truth be told, we’re suckers for a good slice of pie, and thankfully Sister Honey’s serves up just what we need. The classic apple stands on its own, but don’t overlook other favorites like the strawberry rhubarb or the alluring chocolate cream.

Kelly’s Ice Cream

Shaka Donuts
This shop serves up stellar gourmet doughnuts like the Samoa with caramel icing, coconut flakes and chocolate drizzle, and the Pua, which is cloaked in maple icing and bacon. They even offer Portuguese-style malasadas piped full of guava as well as jalapeño and cheddar doughnut holes for good measure.

Light on Sugar
We’ll gladly spend some extra time in the gym if it means we can confidently nosh on this bakery’s sinfully sweet creations like the ube cheesecake cream puff, the strawberry-Nutella crepe roll or the dark chocolate and pistachio tart.

Sugar Divas Cakery
The women behind this bakery make sure each cake they make is “deliciously designed,” and anyone who has ever had the opportunity to fork through one of their moist, decadent works of art know these museum-worthy creations taste even better than they look.

Teak Neighborhood Grill
With more than 20 options on the menu, there’s no shortage of ways to satisfy burger aficionados here. Both beef and bison burgers come piled high with toppings that range from the familiar to intriguing and are slid in between brioche, pretzel buns and even two glazed doughnuts.

Phat Ash Bakery – Best of Cookies

Holy Grain Coffee Shop
Holy Grain is adored for brewing wonderful Americanos, lattes, espressos and iced coffees in an inviting atmosphere that creates the right setting to catch up on some work, chat with a good friend or perhaps chow down on a delightful sandwich or salad.

Charlie’s Bakery and Creamery
The origins of this beloved bakery date back to 1971, though a new owner took over the reins a couple of years ago. Luckily, the place hasn’t skipped a beat and continues to be known for tantalizing the taste buds with an impressive selection of cookies, pastries, cakes, cheesecakes and other dynamic desserts to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Lazy Moon Pizza
The giant slices at Lazy Moon get a lot of attention (and rightfully so), but there’s something undeniable about slicing into a well-crafted calzone. Here you could go traditional with creamy ricotta, mozzarella and marinara or dig into the birria beef with feta, mozzarella and pickled onions.

At the Doghouse, hot dogs are simply a blank canvas for artistic expression. Think dogs placed into a poppyseed bun with cream cheese and topped with everything seasoning or one outfitted with peanut butter, honey and raisins. If you’re not feeling that adventurous, there’s plenty of tamer choices, too, but where’s the fun in that?

The Porch South Orange
These meaty wings are first brined and then cooked twice to make sure they have the ideal crispiness before being coated in your choice of nearly 20 sauces that vary from the typical mild, medium or hot to Thai peanut butter and jelly, lemon pepper or sweet chili marmalade.

NY Bagel Deli & Pizza
They say you can’t get a good bagel outside of New York City, but this shop is doing its best to dispel that myth by baking up the real deal with a crisp, golden exterior that gives way to a spongey, chewy texture and a slightly sweet finish.

The Woods
The skilled bartenders at this warm and friendly watering hole mix up a killer Old Fashioned along with a number of creative signature cocktails that attract boozehounds from near and far, especially on Sundays when happy hour specials run all day long.

With a dozen varieties, there’s a ramen dish for everyone at Domu, where everything from the house-made noodles to the complex and flavorful broths shine bright. If it’s your first visit, go for the curry with fried chicken thighs, Japanese beech mushrooms, Thai basil, scallions and chili paste.

Doghouse – Best of Hot Dogs

Wave Asian Bistro and Sushi
High-quality ingredients, ultra-fresh fish and a whimsical approach help this place set itself apart in a crowded field. Come for the rolls and stay for the “sushi donut”—sushi rice formed in the shape of a doughnut and topped with slices of tuna, salmon and avocado and stuffed with your choice of spicy tuna or krab.

Sideward Brewing
Craft beer enthusiasts frequent this Milk District brewpub to wet their whistle with crisp and refreshing lagers, New England-style IPAs, robust porters and super stouts being poured from one of the 20 taps.

David Ramirez Chocolates
Using ingredients sourced from around the globe, including only the finest European chocolate, executive pastry chef David Ramirez has won dozens of awards for his artisanal rich and creamy bite-sized beauties.

Wine Bar George
Master sommelier George Miliotes’ curated wine list of over 200 bottles ensures even the most opinionated oenophile will find the right vintage to suit their taste as they graze on charcuterie boards and shared small plates.

Hunger Street Tacos
We all agree that Hunger Street’s tacos are some of the best, but the quesadillas are equally dynamite. Stuffed with shredded chicken, seared brisket and chorizo, or the sublime squash blossom; it’s an ensemble cast full of star performances.

Hawker’s Asian Street Food
Splendid offerings include the five-spice pulled duck with black vinegar hoisin, cucumbers and spring onions as well as the memorable thick-cut pork belly with pickled mustard greens, hard-boiled egg, roasted peanuts and brown sugar.

B Cupcakes
Elegant and elevated, you can taste the love in each one of the 20-plus flavors like the raspberry-infused chocolate cupcake with cream cheese frosting, the German chocolate or the Elvis—a banana cupcake with peanut butter cream cheese frosting, dipped in chocolate ganache and finished with sea salt.

The Tap Room at Dubsdread
Trying to choose between a beef tenderloin-topped flatbread with a blue cheese fondue (made in-house), salty bacon, sautéed onions, mozzarella and balsamic or the refreshing tomato and basil with both mozzarella and feta is no easy task. We’ll take both.

Wine Bar George – Best of Wine Bars

Cuba Libre
The mouthwatering menu will take you on a journey to the Pearl of the Antilles with authentic tastes and inspired dishes that hit on all cylinders, namely the citrus-marinated and slow-roasted pork shoulder with an onion-caper mojo sauce.

Shakers American Café
This breakfast institution serves up plenty of crowd-pleasers, and this superb side dish fits squarely into that category. A must-have: toasted honey-oat bread is layered with mashed avocado, goat cheese, kalamata olives, diced tomato and red onions.

407 Café
Delightfully delicate, the crepes here are magnificent and come in more than 50 varieties. Go for the Nutella with banana or the chicken Marsala with grilled chicken breast, mozzarella, spinach, yellow raisins and walnuts with a Marsala wine reduction.

The Kind Cleaver
The sandwiches at this vegan deli are so well-made that even carnivores sing their praises. The Jawn Adams—a playful take on the Philly cheesesteak—features black pepper “beef” sliced thin with peppers and onions and a cheese sauce on a baguette.

903 Mills Market
A true treat, we hold a special place in our heart for this classic sandwich made expertly when ham, turkey, Swiss and American cheese are combined with a cranberry aioli in between two pieces of French toast, grilled and hit with a generous dusting of powdered sugar.

Wines by the glass, signature cocktails and approachable light bites like the margherita pizza and cacio e pepe chips with chive and truffle make this sophisticated spot the place to be during the week between the hours of 4 and 6 p.m.

Grilled Cheezus
The scintillating selection immediately grabs your attention with contributions that run the gamut from yellow cheddar, mozzarella and American on brioche to the action-packed Chuck Norris—cheddar and American blended with creamy horseradish, roast beef, caramelized onions and blue cheese crumbles.

4 Rivers Smokehouse – Best of Barbeque Sandwhiches

Pom Pom’s Teahouse and Sandwicheria
Unique choices like the Dazed and Confused (brisket and bacon with strawberry jam and cayenne peanut butter) or the yellow curry chicken salad with apples, red onions and almonds make this place popular for all sorts of foodies.

4 Rivers Smokehouse
4 Rivers’ sandwich menu showcases its award-winning barbecue with its classic slow-cooked pulled pork and brisket that has been wet-aged for 30 days as headliners. More often than not, you’ll find us devouring the Longhorn made of chopped brisket and sausage with a smokehouse relish, onion rings and provolone.

Gnarly Barley
Grab a pint of one of the limited brews on tap and the Snack Attack Fries, an extremely “gnarly” order of waffle fries topped with homemade pulled pork, blue cheese, tiger sauce and pico de gallo.

The Strand
With a constantly rotating menu, diners are sure to always find something new to savor as they start their meal off in style with one of the thoughtfully-prepared appetizers. The burrata with roasted pear, a hazelnut and mint pesto, and a fig gastrique is just one example of a recent highlight.
