Great Scott!
M
y husband and I love to travel abroad and typically take one international vacation per
year. However, our last trip - to Scotland - was during September of 2014. Shortly after, we
found out we were expecting our son so, in 2015, we traded in our annual global voyage for
newborn adventures at home.
We both loved Scotland and had the privilege of exploring two remarkable cities (Edinburgh and
Glasgow), a quaint town (Oban), and a picturesque island (Mull). Thanks to a rental car and thick
soled shoes, we were able to see much of the country in a short time and appreciate its geographic
diversity – plush, green fields occupied by hairy coos (Highland cattle with long hair) and fluffy
sheep; winding, historic, cobblestone streets leading to castles and other landmarks; busy metropolitan
centers; gorgeous, rolling hills sprinkled with waterfalls; untouched, rugged terrains; and brisk and
plentiful bodies of
water. Among many
cherished memories,
I especially enjoyed
hiking 822 feet up
to the top of Arthur’s
Seat, an extinct
volcano just beyond
the Royal Mile that
grants excellent
panoramic views of
Edinburgh. I suspect
that my husband most
appreciated touring
distilleries and learning
the process of making
Scotch and chowing
down on haggis!
With our Scotland
adventure fresh in our minds, our family was thrilled to attend last year’s Central Florida Scottish
Highland Games. Upon arrival, my husband headed straight to the haggis food stand. Then we settled
in to watch strong, kilt-clad men and women compete in Highland-inspired athletics, including various
feats of throwing hefty logs, hammers, and rocks. We then strolled around the large festival within
Central Winds Park in Winter Springs to see Border Collie demonstrations, pipping & drumming
shows, Highland dance performances, clan & society stations, and brave individuals attempting the
boulder boogie (i.e. walking while carrying an incredibly heavy stone).
Orlando Family Magazine is excited to partner once again with the Central Florida Scottish
Highland Games, and one lucky reader will win tickets to this year’s event (January 16 & 17). Find the
contest instructions on our resource page.
Later this year, my husband will likely travel again to Scotland for business. The question is…
should I tag along solo and restart our annual adults’ abroad trip or should I attempt to travel
internationally with an infant?
Happy New Year,
Editor’s
