Healthy Smiles

Dr. Jeffrey J. Sevor and his team at Central Florida Periodontics & Implantology utilize the latest technology and techniques to provide periodontal care to patients in a relaxed, safe environment.

Dr. Jeffrey J. Sevor finds it troubling when people who struggle with health issues do not recognize oral health’s connection to their general well-being.

“It’s not common knowledge,” says the owner of Central Florida Periodontics & Implantology. “It’s certainly a factor in periodontal disease, and oral health has shown to affect cardiovascular health as well as pancreatic health. These are not strict links—direct causation—but there are strong associations.”

At his Winter Park practice, Dr. Sevor offers “all manner of periodontal, gum, tissue and tooth issues, as well as implants from the simplest to complex reconstructions,” doing his part to ensure that patients leave healthy in the oral realm, knowing this will have a positive impact on other facets of their well-being.

Referrals for happy, healthy smiles

“I’m primarily a referral-based doctor, meaning I help my general dentists take care of their patients. I provide all manner of periodontal therapy,” says Dr. Sevor.

In fact, he was the first periodontal specialist to bring the FDA-approved, patented Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) protocol to the Central Florida area in 2007.

“That’s been a game changer for as far as our ability to take care of people who have gum disease and don’t want to have full gum surgery,” Dr. Sevor says.

This minimally invasive dental laser removes infected tissue and bacteria from the gums, and can also aid in tissue regeneration and bone growth. Dr. Sevor says it is 95% more comfortable than traditional gum surgical techniques: “I’ve done thousands upon thousands of procedures with good results. Patients come here seeking that care specifically.”

Dental implants are another big part of Central Florida Periodontics & Implantology. Although Dr. Sevor says patients are always better off if they can keep their teeth, implants can work wonderfully when needed.

“From the simplest implant to full-mouth reconstruction, we work very closely with our lab and our referring doctors for a team approach and end up with very nice results,” he says.

Top technology and techniques

As recently as two years ago, diagnostic models and implant records involved what Dr. Sevor calls “the old standard and dreaded dental impression”—or a negative impression of a patient’s teeth made with malleable material in a mold. Today, everything is digital.

“The digital scanning and subsequent collaborative treatment planning with my surgical guide company helps us to be more precise,” Dr. Sevor says. “The key to all of this is to know what the final result is going to be before you even start.”

He likens the planning to a blueprint for a house, explaining that “you want to have a good drawing before you pick up your lumbar and start nailing it together. With digital scanning, we’re able to actually know what we’re going to do.”

Another “big boon” in the field is guided surgery and guided implants. For 30 years, Dr. Sevor placed implants freehand, using his knowledge and experience to estimate the right fit. Now, guided surgery can predict a predetermined implant position to “place the implant perfectly.”

“This digital dentistry, digital treatment planning, digital workflow—it’s just exploding. We’re getting better and better and better,” he affirms. “It provides a better final result for our patients.”

A leader in easing anxiety

There can be a lot of anxiety surrounding dental procedures, especially when it comes to surgery. At Central Florida Periodontics & Implantology, IV sedation can help curb this nervousness, making the process better for not only the patient but also the provider.

“IV sedation is a boon. We use medications and provide moderate sedation,” Dr. Sevor explains. “People are just snoozing, and we can, of course, still rouse them if we need … It helps me, too: If a patient isn’t struggling or upset, I can do my job better.”

IV sedation works quickly, and combined with a numbing medication, patients feel no pain during the procedure. Providers can monitor and adjust the dosage as needed, and because of the extended period of sedation, several different procedures can be completed in one session.

Central Florida Periodontics & Implantology will also provide prescriptions for medication that can be taken before an appointment to help ease anxious feelings. These methods—combined with a carefully crafted care plan from a doctor who listens to questions and concerns—means patients can tackle their periodontal needs without the nerves and worry.

Financial support

Receiving a referral from a dentist for periodontal work or dental implants can be overwhelming on its own, but when you factor in the potential costs outside of insurance coverage, it may seem easier for many to avoid the work.

Because Dr. Sevor and his team don’t want to see anyone suffer poor health outcomes due to monetary constraints, they offer assistance to their patients. Options include finance programs CareCredit and Sunbit, which both approve a wide range of credit scores, as well as plans working with the patient’s wallet in mind. This may include spacing out procedures over a period of time so bills are spread out.

“I’m from a working-class background,” Dr. Sevor begins. “I respect working people, and we try to help people as well as we can to afford the care they need.”
