Make Father’s Day Colorful

According to History.com, in 1910 the governor of Washington proclaimed the nation’s first Father’s Day. However, it was not until 1972, 58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day official, that Father’s Day became a nationwide holiday as declared by President Richard Nixon. In the 1920s & 1930s, some advocated in favor of scrapping both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day to, instead, establish the combined holiday of Parent’s Day. Do you think a collaborative holiday would be better? I suspect that our mom readers would opt to maintain separate observance days but, since Father’s Day generates less hype, perhaps many of our dad readers would not have a preference.

Americans spend about $7.4 billion less on gifts and goodies for Father’s Day than for Mother’s Day, according to the National Retail Federation. So, what’s the deal with showing more (retail) love to moms vs. dads? Some say that people feel a stronger emotional link to their mom over their dad; others believe that it’s just easier to buy for moms (flowers, candy, brunch) than for dads (tie, sports item, gift card).

Countless studies have shown that fathers are vital to the emotional well-being of their children. Fathers who are affectionate, supportive, and involved greatly impact a child’s cognitive and social development, academic achievement, self-esteem, and more. You don’t need to overspend on Father’s Day to demonstrate your gratitude (or that of your child), of course, but definitely let dad know how much you and/or the kids value him… with a card, gift, meal, or family activity, paired with tons of hugs.
