Whether looking for a romantic jaunt for you and your loved one or seeking out a long weekend with the family, there are many interesting and exciting spots within a day’s drive with lots to offer. From fun outdoor activities and excursions to amazing restaurants, high-end shopping, live arts and entertainment, and impeccable accommodations, these hotspots have it all and then some. Check out where you should be making plans to visit next.
Amelia Island
This island is home to Fernandina Beach and 50 blocks of historic downtown streets that offer a variety of dining, retail, culture and entertainment options along Centre Street. Get educated on the precolonial past of the island’s shores and the rich African American history in the region. There are also options to get outside and explore the seaside parks or take a tour on the beaches that feature horse trails. Birdwatchers will especially enjoy grabbing a pair of binoculars to catch a glimpse of the hundreds of species that are known to inhabit the island.
St. Petersburg
With more than 1,000 events and festivals held throughout the course of the year, there’s something for everyone in St. Petersburg. This peninsular city is surrounded by 244 miles of shoreline that is rich with biodiversity. Enjoy this aspect of the area at the 245-acre Boyd Hill Nature Preserve, botanical parks or along one of the canoe and kayak trails. Alternatively, you can immerse yourself in the local arts scene with the city’s public art and outdoor installations. History buffs can learn about the area’s storied past by walking around downtown or hopping aboard a trolley for a guided excursion taking place the first Saturday of each month.
Naples
For those with a taste for the finer things in life, Naples offers a range of elevated dining, high-end shopping, and immersive arts and culture. Spend a day traversing Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South for some retail therapy and the chance to check out some local art galleries and other points of interest. If you prefer spending some relaxing time along the water, there’s also a wide range of boating and fishing options available that are fun for the whole family. West Palm Beach
No matter if you’re interested in indoor or outdoor fun, you’ll find plenty ways to fill up your days when visiting West Palm Beach. Start with a visit to Manatee Lagoon, where you can learn more about the aquatic creatures and even take a yoga class outside on the observation deck. Elsewhere, the Cox Science Center and Aquarium combines education with hands-on experiences and interactive exhibits that are sure to spark interest. Get some shopping done along Antique Row or head to the GreenMarket to support local farmers and various vendors. Sanibel Island
Though only three miles across and 12 miles long, this little island is sometimes called the Seashell Capital of the World, with visitors coming from all over to collect the plentiful pastel colored natural treasures. Guests are encouraged to go out in the early morning hours to search for the 400 types of shells found in the area, performing what is affectionately known as the “Sanibel Stoop.” You can also squeeze in a round of golf at one of the courses in the city or in neighboring Captiva Island, with other worthy recreational activities including bike rentals, wildlife drives and eco charters.
Pompano Beach
Known as the “Heart of the Gold Coast,” this town has recently installed a water taxi, allowing visitors and residents alike to explore the area in a whole new way. You can also explore underwater at Shipwreck Park, an artificial reef complete with existing shipwrecks and art installations. The three miles of beach features restored sand dunes and playgrounds, while exercise areas are shaded with tree canopies. What’s more, you can play pickleball at one of the more than 20 courts, cast a rod along the 865-foot fishing pier, catch a performance at the amphitheater or enjoy a drink as the sun sets at one of the beachfront sports bars.
Space Coast
In addition to being home to the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, this area boasts scenic beaches and diverse parks for a well-rounded experience. Take a guided tour of the historic 151-foot Cape Canaveral Lighthouse, mixing the aerospace history lessons with a maritime one. For those who enjoy the performing arts, The King Center offers a variety of music, comedy and more, including regular appearances by the Brevard Symphony Orchestra. The little ones will surely enjoy a visit to The Dinosaur Store and Museum, where they can explore two floors of prehistoric and ancient artifacts.
Coral Gables
Those interested in art, history and nature have many things to engage with here, including the Tropical Botanic Garden which is home to 3,000 species of plants and animals, including those that are rare and endangered. The century-old Venetian Pool is a main attraction for any swimmer, complete with two waterfalls and grottos. Meanwhile, the number of galleries, playhouses and theaters allow visitors to become engrossed in the community’s art scene. A stroll through Giralda Plaza offers plenty of restaurants serving up a variety of cuisines, not to mention several bars and coffeehouses with outdoor seating perfect for people watching.
Fort Myers
For people who love the aquatic scene, reefs including the Danger Reef and Sherman’s Reef are available for visitors to dive in and get an up-close look at life under the sea. If you prefer to keep your head above water, head to the Wild Turkey Strand Preserve for a hike and spot turkey and other birds, deer and even the occasional gator in the marshes. If you’re one who never travels without Fido, an excursion to Dog Beach Park will allow your pup to expend some energy splashing in the back bay waters. Local businesses offer everything from chocolate to farm fresh foods, and the area’s flea markets and art galleries are perfect ways to further connect to the local scene.
Miramar Beach
For a relaxing day of self-care, shopping, fitness or natural scenery, Miramar Beach’s numerous offerings are for you. Take a walk or bike ride along the Scenic Highway 98 Trail, which offers three miles of picturesque views of the coastline as you get in a little exercise. Over on Grand Boulevard is where you’ll find a hub of activity, no matter if you’re in need of a memorable meal, looking for the perfect outfit, attending a special event or catching some live entertainment. Miramar Beach is also home to Dolphin Reef, composed of more than 75 artificial structures and accessible via a short paddle from Edgewater Beach.
St. Augustine
St. Augustine is considered the United States’ oldest city and offers plenty of ways to learn about its roots aboard the country’s oldest trolley or in the back of a horse-drawn carriage. Be sure to check out the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum and the Lightner Museum, the latter of which is located at the former Hotel Alcazar, which dates back to 1887. Looking for some adventure? The St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park offers the chance to get up close and personal with gators, crocs and other animals while discovering more about the park’s conservation work.
Key West
When making your way to the southernmost point of the continental U.S., you’ll find plenty of ways to fill your time. Head to the beach for some snorkeling or perhaps to take a tour of the island on a jet ski or glass bottom boat. After you’ve dried off, be sure to plan a visit to the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden. The unique arboretum, botanical garden, museum and wildlife refuge encompasses more than 15 acres, allowing visitors to connect with Mother Nature in meaningful ways.
