Maitland Pediatric Dentistry is a fun and comfortable place for children to learn healthy dental hygiene practices that continue into adulthood.

Teeth are a crucial element of a person’s overall health, especially since adult teeth are a permanent feature of the face once they come in during childhood and early adolescence.

Taking care of dental hygiene from an early age is incredibly important, and setting up those habits is one of the best predictors for continued dental health into adulthood, which is why Maitland Pediatric Dentistry works to provide dental care and education to children and their families.

Dr. Domenic Aloise founded the office in January 2024 with the motto, “Treating Your Family Like Our Own,” emphasizing that he and everyone else on the team at Maitland Pediatric Dentistry understand that every patient and family has different needs.

“When you visit our office, you’re not a number,” he says. “We see every family as unique and special. We don’t use a one-size-fits-all approach, and oftentimes we have to think outside the box, and not only just for exams, but also for treatment. We care about everyone who walks through our door and wants what’s best for them. We greet them with a hello, we try to remember everybody’s names, and we want everyone to leave our office with a smile and feel happy that they chose us.”

Since dental care should begin early in life, within six months of the first tooth erupting from the gums, healthy dental hygiene habits and positive associations with things like brushing teeth and going to the dentist can start in infancy. 

“This is called anticipatory guidance, and its principles are a cornerstone of our office and cover many aspects of oral health,” Dr. Aloise says. “Baby teeth are not as strong as adult teeth, and issues can arise pretty fast. The early dental appointment is not just about checking the few teeth that have erupted, but it’s also to inspect the jaws, looking for any early dental anomalies or pathology, discussing milestones, oral habits, and most importantly, prevention.”

The patient and parent experience are incredibly important at Maitland Pediatric Dentistry, which is why everything that happens in the office is communicated effectively to both the parent and the child in terms they understand. 

Children also receive a bag of dental goodies upon beginning treatment at the office and the space is full of dental toys and books to help further educate them on how to care for their teeth. And to keep them occupied while they wait for their appointment time, the waiting room features retro games for them to play. 

When they go back to have their teeth cleaned and treated, there are TVs mounted above the exam chairs so that patients can watch movies and relax as they undergo their dental treatment. 

“We want it to be a fun office, but also one where you learn and reinforce good oral hygiene,” Dr. Aloise says. “And we’re big on tell-show-do, which is telling what we’re going to do, showing what we’re going to do, and then actually doing it. We try to make it very interactive and unforced.”

As for the parents, their experience is impacted by how much they can be involved in their child’s care, with Dr. Aloise encouraging them to come back to the hygiene area and treatment rooms. Dr. Aloise and his team interact with the parents just as much as their children, ensuring everyone has a positive experience.

The office recently introduced sedation, helping to further expand the services available and giving patients and their parents easy access to the care they need in an office and with dental care workers they already have a relationship with and trust. 

“We want our office to be as comprehensive as possible, and there’s many reasons why a child may need sedation. Instead of referring a family to an office that the parents or patients don’t have a good bond or connection with, we can now provide complete care for their child,” Dr. Aloise says.

Maitland Pediatric Dentistry encourages the families that come to them to create a dental home, making dental health a priority, though Dr. Aloise stresses that visiting the dentist is a vital part of creating this kind of environment in the home.

“We want each family to understand why it’s important to have good oral hygiene practices, and then provide the tools, tips and techniques to help create that same fun and positive attitude at home that you will have at our office,” he says. “For example, we find that if a family is having difficulty with brushing a child’s teeth at home, after they have an appointment at our office, it usually translates to the child doing better at home, and so the parents can use our guidance, positivity, and examples that they had at our office to help improve at their home. And as the child ages, the dental home must also change and evolve.”
