No one can predict exactly what the orthodontic industry will look like in five years, but you can bet Dr. Scott Sakowitz and his team at Sakowitz Smiles Orthodontics will remain at the forefront of orthodontic technology and treatment.

“We’re using technology to help make everything work better—to be more convenient and more efficient,” Dr. Sakowitz says. “Technology is changing and advancing at a crazy pace, and anyone who is not adopting these new technologies and keeping things current is going to be left behind.”

For Dr. Sakowitz, however, technology is only meaningful when it translates into a better experience for patients.

Optimizing that experience is central to everything at Sakowitz Smiles. New patients can expect to be greeted with a smile and have a thorough discussion with a doctor, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

“The most important thing is that they understand their options, even if today is not the right time to begin treatment,” Dr. Sakowitz says. “They should leave feeling comfortable knowing what treatment involves, what they’re getting into and the results and outcomes they can expect.”

The Sakowitz Smiles team pairs the latest technology and advancements with an individualized, patient-first approach to care.

“Technology does not replace me, the orthodontist. But it allows me to be a better orthodontist,” Dr. Sakowitz says. “At the end of the day, it’s about delivering a great experience from a customer service standpoint, while also delivering the highest quality orthodontic care.”

DentalMonitoring—an AI-powered platform that helps dental professionals monitor and evaluate patient care around the clock—is one of the ways Dr. Sakowitz has enhanced his practice to offer a higher level of service and care.

The cutting-edge software helps evaluate patients’ progress between visits and can reduce the need for certain in-office appointments. Patients take a series of photos of their teeth using a smartphone, upload them through the DentalMonitoring app, and the program’s AI helps identify potential treatment concerns.

But patients aren’t losing the human touch. The Sakowitz Smiles team reviews the scans and alerts, with support from an after-hours monitoring team, allowing the technology to support—not replace—the judgment of the doctor and clinical team.

For patients with braces, DentalMonitoring can detect concerns such as a broken bracket, loose wire or missing color tie. It may also identify minor issues that can be addressed remotely with guidance from the team, while alerting the office when an in-person visit is needed.

DentalMonitoring has also transformed the way Sakowitz Smiles manages Invisalign treatment. Invisalign uses a customized series of clear aligners to gradually move a patient’s teeth toward their planned smile. With the traditional approach, patients advance to a new aligner on a regular weekly schedule, while in-office visits every few months help ensure their teeth continue moving as intended.

“Generally speaking, it worked,” Dr. Sakowitz says of the traditional approach. “But if a tooth gets off track or a patient isn’t as consistent as we want them to be, an aligner may stop fitting properly in a certain area.”

With DentalMonitoring, Dr. Sakowitz and his team can evaluate how the aligners are fitting between office visits. If there is an issue, they can provide guidance to improve the fit or have the patient remain in an aligner longer before advancing. If everything is going well, they may advise a patient to change aligners more frequently. As a result, many Invisalign patients require fewer routine office visits while still receiving close oversight throughout treatment.

“It allows us to customize the pace of treatment based on how each patient’s teeth are moving,” Dr. Sakowitz says. “I think DentalMonitoring has completely transformed how we manage Invisalign treatment and gives us a level of insight we’ve never had before. And on the braces side, it helps us identify and address problems earlier.”

That commitment to combining advanced technology with personalized care has helped Sakowitz Smiles Orthodontics grow throughout the Orlando area.

Sakowitz Smiles Orthodontics first opened in Lake Nona in 2018, followed closely by its Winter Garden office in 2019. Its third office opened in Dr. Phillips in 2024.

“I knew Orlando covered a large area, and I wanted to make sure we were accessible to its growing communities,” Dr. Sakowitz says. “As time went on, we built referral relationships with different doctors, developed relationships with patients and their families, and gained a positive word-of-mouth reputation in the community. We’re fortunate that our patients have become our biggest advocates.”

Even as new breakthroughs emerge, Dr. Sakowitz remains personally involved in overseeing his patients’ care—and he intends to keep it that way. He does not adopt every new technology that appears in the orthodontic space. But when he is confident an innovation is ready and will provide a meaningful benefit to patients, he thoughtfully integrates it into the practice.

“It’s about adopting at the right time, not being afraid to make those changes, and doing what you need to do to stay ahead of the curve,” Dr. Sakowitz says. “Our goal is to provide the best possible orthodontic experience.”
